Lordy, Lordy Look Who's 40!

HELLO STEEL COW FRIENDS!

In an effort to celebrate World Dairy Expo (the one show we exhibit at each year) I am writing more blog posts and newsletters to give you guys a bit more information about us and show you the family behind Steel Cow. Forgive me if some of this information is redundant - I am trying my best to write for those of you who have no idea who Steel Cow is, those of you who may know but have only a vague idea, those of you I have known my whole life, and those of you who fall somewhere in between!
.
For a chance to be entered to win a free 20"x20" print Saturday October 3th 2020, please comment below before 8pm standard time on October 3rd, 2020 with a valid email address so we can contact you. Void where prohibited, lower 48 states only.

STEEL COW IN A NUTSHELL
For those of you who are unfamiliar with Steel Cow - this is a business I started 16 years ago! It is a business based on my paintings of farm animals and other animals. I paint original paintings of these animals and then we make, in Iowa, all of our products based on these animal paintings. My husband Josh is a big part of our company, as he manages all of the printing and shop work associated with making our products.
(The above photo shows me trying to put together little thumbnail prints of my paintings together for our Sweet Sixteen print - available here.)

(Our World Dairy Expo booth in 2013 - wow does it look different now!)

WHY COWS?
When I first started painting cows I can’t tell you how many questions I got from people asking me “why do you paint cows?”  At the time there were very few people painting cows and it fascinated most people why I would focus my paintings on one animal. Then I attended World Dairy Expo for the first time (this was 10 years ago!) and no one asked me “why do you paint cows?” It was a relief and a blessing to be surrounded by so many other families whose lives revolves around cows. World Dairy Expo has become one of the weeks I most look forward to each year as I get to meet up with so many of you that I only see once a year. I’m also not going to lie - it's also a big sales week for us. My parents usually have two and maybe three of our kids for all or part of the week and even though it’s busy and stressful for my parents it sure is a wonderful break from the normal mom duties for me!
.

EDDIE TURNS 8!

.
My husband Josh and I have worked our Expo booth mostly ourselves - (although we have had a couple of helpers along the way)  Eddie, our oldest boy who just turned 8 two weeks ago attended his first World Dairy Expo when he was just 8 days old! (The above photos were taken a couple of weeks ago. Eddie loves fishing and got some waders for his birthday - which he just had to try out! And Harry, who is now 5, is never very far away from his big brother.)
I was in the hospital for 72 hours before Eddie was born as I did NOT want a cesarean section because then I would not be able to attend the expo. Well, luckily with probably only less than an hour left, Edison Francis Miller was born naturally and eight days later we were able to take our newborn with us to Expo.
.
.
Most people thought it was so sweet to see a newborn at our booth, but one lady scolded me pretty badly for working so shortly after having a baby. I think she thought I was working for someone else’s company and I was forced to work - but she stormed away before I could tell her that it was by choice I was there with baby Eddie in tow. I didn’t work much that expo anyway as Josh pretty much did everything and I just sat in my pretty pink chair taking care of the baby, talking to customers and nursing in the bathroom (thank goodness the Dairy Girl Network has a family room now so no more nursing in the bathrooms for moms attending World Dairy Expo!)
.
OK, I have hit World Dairy Expo pretty hard, and I do apologize if it is getting old. It's just that it feels so weird not having a big fun-filled and big sales-filled week in Madison and I had to mark it somehow! And we do truly appreciate all the support you guys have given us over the years at World Dairy Expo (and all the support in general!) We love making awesome products for you and your families to enjoy and we hope you will keep bringing our prints into your homes and offices.

Here are some more fun pics of our family from the past couple of weeks.

.
Ellis is now two and he is a little charmer. This summer I started growing flowers on a bigger level than I have ever done before - and if I get to it - tomorrow's blog post - or I will say the next blog post - will be about our garden and flower filled summer and fall!

40?!!!

This past summer I turned 40! I know some of you are much older than this, and many of you are much younger than this but 40 is such a milestone. I am a full blown adult now and it sure doesn’t seem like it. Sure I am responsible (mostly!)  have three boys, have been married for 17 years and have owned a home and car for awhile but in some ways I feel that I was just turning 20 last year. Time is funny like this. I wasn’t able to have a big party for my 40th this summer due to Covid, and I don’t know if I would have anyway as I am a major introvert, but I thought I should at least announce it to the world. So here it is: I am now 40. And I’m too old to be on any of those “40 under 40” lists to watch as far as young professional women go. Oh well. I am gracefully accepting my newly forming grey hairs and wrinkles around my eyes. I’ve always loved gray hairs anyways......... as long as they are on other people's heads - ha!

Thanks for reading!

I’m so sad that you weren’t able to attend the expo in person! I know what a joyful and exciting experience it is (also, I imagine, a tremendous amount of work!) for you and your family. As you know, Virginia is my favorite of your beautiful paintings. Hope we can see you all soon. Moocho love!! XOXO

First of happy 40th birthday! It is a big milestone and one that should be celebrated in any way each of us chooses!

I thank you for sharing your WDE stories! I am an old dairy farmer and haven’t been to Expo in a few years but, I too, have many fond memories, so hearing others tell their stories brings a connection that some may not understand.

Your work is something to be adored. What talent you have! I am lucky to have a couple of your pieces in my home and look forward to adding to the collection!

Enjoy your 40th year, your beautiful boys and all your talent. I would say you have squeezed many great things into 40 quick years❤️
